  • Desperately seeking help and a diagnosis for 6 year old boy

I'm the mom of a very active 6 year old boy. He displays traits that range all across the board in types of diagnoses. We are working with doctors to try and nail this down. Please let me know what types of experiences you have had with the following symptoms:

    Always in motion
    Frequent violent and loud outbursts
    Chews on clothing
Jumps up and down while shaking hands
    Bed wets
    Night terrors
    Makes fidgety gestures and sounds
    Sleep is almost nonexistent

I'm at a loss most days and we have been preliminary diagnosis of ADHD with ODD but treatment hasn't been going well. I'm confused and believe that he may also be showing signs of tics. Any advice or suggestions of things to look for?

    Thank you.

Welcome to the TSFC Forum, NSMommy! Thanks for joining us. Hopefully we can provide some support and information you need during what be a difficult time for you and your son.

    treatment hasn't been going well
Would you elaborate on what treatment has been proposed and why it doesn't seem to be going well?

Is your son being assessed by your family physician, your son's pediatrician or has your son been referred to a specialist? If a specialist, what is the specialty of the consultant?

believe that he may also be showing signs of tics.
Doctors tell us that about one third of children express tics sometime during their growing years, that go away on their own, without intervention.

If your son's doctor notices tics or notes the tics as part of the symptom history you provide, the doctor may diagnose Provisional Tic Disorder, which is a "placeholder" diagnosis subject to further assessment at a later date.

To help you with the technicalities of tic disorder diagnoses, please see this thread and the links contained within that thread.

    Looking forward to your comments.
