  • TS and OCD movie!

I was flipping through my comcast "on demand" list of movies and saw a movie called "dirty filthy love". Not sure who is in it but it is about a guy who has TS and OCD and mainly is just trying to get through life and a relationship. I havent even seen the whole thing but I just thought the main actor did a great job portraying these two disorders. Has anyone seen this movie?
The other day at a local grocery store, I saw a rack with books on it and one of them said, "pregancy for dummies"............

      TS and OCD movie!

When I get the chance Im going to sit down and watch it all. Im actually googling it now. It looks like it was made in 2004. It is a UK movie and I will admit, they prolly didnt have a ton of money for production but if you can get past that part, the main actor I think does a great job of portaying these 2 disorders. The story line seemed to be pretty good too. Actors, Michael Sheen, Adrian Bower. 120 min.

          TS and OCD movie!

Sorry, yea, I have comcast. And due to it being a UK film not sure how availible it will be in Canada or the US. Its just one of the few movies thats not a documentory that is not a "bad" look at TS. As we have talked before about it, TS is usually portrayed as the swearing disorder. Here it more shows the mental aspect of what a person with TS and OCD goes through. Now my OCD is not as severe so I dont relate much on the OCD stuff.

                      TS and OCD movie!

I remember reading about this on Leonard Misners website (he was in Montreal and sang a song with Rick Fowlers band). He was involved in the making of the movie - as reproduced from his website (leonardmisner.net), he says:

"Sure it sounds like a porno movie but in reality it is an amazing look into the struggles of a man with Tourette Syndrome and OCD. He goes undiagnosed until a stranger tells him what disorder he has. That is exactly how I was diagnosed. The writer of this film has OCD but wanted the character to have Tourette also. Granada Media contacted me to learn about Tourette and the tics associated with it. I was honored to help with this project and am pleased with how it turned out."

I haven't seen the movie myself, but it sure sounds interesting.

                        Tall Tic'er,

Your experience about the way you discovered your Tourette is very interesting. We have struggled through discussions about whether it's proper to tell a stranger or even acquaintance their behaviors appear to be signs of Tourette.

How did you feel and react when a stranger approached you with this information?

                          TS and OCD movie!

                          Hey Steve,

Soory about any confusion on that posting - I wasn't diagnosed by a stranger. That quote is from Leonards website - he was diagnosed by a stranger and helped with the Dirty Filthy Love movie.

But to answer your question about how someone feels/reacts when a stranger tells them they (may) have TS - I recall Leonard saying he was relieved to finally find out what it was.

My case was different - mine was experiencing the feeling of NOT being told by a friend. I went to see my doctors (family Dr. & Neurologist) and had a series of tests done (blood work, CAT scan, EEG) I guess to rule out other possibilities/diagnosis' before I was handed the TS diagnosis. I was then telling a friend (who happened to work for the Canadian Mental Health Association) that I have TS. She said "yeah - I've known that for years" through her observations. My initial reaction was "you could have told me and saved me all these medical visits". It was said in a joking manner and I wasn't upset.

Looking at it with hindsight, I had never discussed my concern with tics with her so perhaps she didn't feel comfortable coming forward with it. I do remember her talking about an article she saw on Dr. Dunc McKinley so maybe this supposed to be a big hint that I didn't pick up on or perhaps she thought I knew I had TS and would be interested.

I don't know how I would have felt if she came right out and said "You have TS". I guess if it was the early years of symptoms, I probably would have been in denial. (My symptoms didn't really show until my 20's when stress became a factor in life and they became worse - again with hindsight (& TS education), I now recognize things in my youth and teen years that were tics but didn't cause an issue then). If she had told me I had TS when I had already started to already research it and see doctors, then it would have been welcomed.

                            TS and OCD movie!

                            1. Is Leonard on this forum? If not, let's gang up on him... He has to join us here.

                            2. I have seen the movie. Well, a lot of it, but not all. It is FABULOUS if not 100% accurate. Leonard obviously did a bangers and mash job (that's a UK joke, I think) of giving them insight. The portrayals of OCD low- or non-functioning adults is very sad, very funny, and true to life, as far as I can tell. I love that the movie shows how the group tries to beat down their own disorders. For those of you with sensory issues, skip to #3. They actually go to a farm and make themselves roll around in the mud. It was great! I loved the part where an animal made a mess on one guy - I think it was fecal, but it could have been urinary. Either way, it was WAY too late to duck, and he got drenched. I remember feeding my daughter when she was 1. I have terrible "other people's food" OCD. I got over it because I had to, for her. Sometimes it is easy...

                            3. I wrote some brief stuff about my own diagnosis experience. Catch it here:

                            I hope it is useful.

I've not heard of this movie, at least not that I recall. You guys have me curious though and I'm gonna try to keep an eye out for it next time I'm at the video rental store.
