  • Got our appt date

Just wanted to say that we finally got our appt date for Dr Carroll. Sept 6th!!! I guess he wants to do an hour and a half assessment on Chase. After that I am going to ask questions about MEDS and see what he thinks.

I was wondering what is normally involved in this assessment? Is it to watch for tics because Chase is good at supressing them for a while.

    Re: Got our appt date

Doctors who know what they're doing are usually aware that tics don't appear in the doctor's office so well.

He might just try to relax Chase a bit so the tics start to emerge, or he might just talk to the both of you about your experiences to try and diagnose it indirectly.

He'll probably also ask a number of questions that aren't necessarily related to Tourette's Syndrome, but check for other associated disorders, such as ADHD/ADD, OCD, etc, as well as some that rule out non-TS tic disorders.

      Re: Got our appt date

As Colin alludes to, tic suppression is common among many people with Tourette, and physicians with clinical experience in diagnosing Tourette are well aware of the technique.

However they may have the child perform a task that wil take their mind off suppression and may allow some tics to emerge.

In any event, much of the information to make a diagnosis comes from interview in addition to observation, so a competent physician has the skills to get the information required to make the diagnosis.

You are lucky to get in to see him Crystal. We use him as well. We did not however have an assessment like you are talking about so I can't advise you on what to expect.

In our case my son had already been seeing Dr. Carroll for 3 years before he made the diagnosis. He was being treated by Dr. Carroll because he had all of the Plus sypmtoms of TS but no tics. All of a sudden after Christmas in grade 3 he started ticcing. It was like a switch had been flipped. At that point Dr. Carroll was able to formally diagnose him although he had suspected for quite some time.

I am looking forward to seeing Dr Carroll, just because I want to see what he thinks is the first step for MEDS. I would rather ask him than some General Dr who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about TS+.

The receptionist also gave me the number and said if I had any questions, not to hesitate to call. I might just call them on that the next time Chase has a meltdown. LOL!!!

We are off to Edmonton tomorrow to go see the Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist. Hopefully that goes ok because Chase is already anxious.

That is great that you finally have a date. A good best practice it to ensure you have journaled all your questions and concerns as well as any history you have with the symptoms of TS or the associated disorders. You will certainly be asked a lot of questions and don't be discouraged if you can't answer them all. Sometimes we get asked questions that we never really thought about before. One time I was asked by a psychologist if my son (when he was only 4) walked up the stairs starting with his right or left. I had no idea but then when we got home I had to check.

Types of tics and their duration is a good thing too. When starting with a new medical team they always start with the same series of questions. I will have to check but I know some time ago Steve posted a great document that was meant to aid you in helping you share with your doctor or prep for a visit.

Good luck with your other appointment this week

Turns out that Dr Carroll is going to be on holidays for that time. I came home from Chase's appt in Edmonton and there was a message on my machine. SO I have to phone back on MOnday and see when they re-scheduled him.

                  How disappointing!

It can be very frustrating waiting to see specialists. There are so few of them. It is worth the wait though for a TS specialist. TS is so very complicated and different for each. Since my involvement with the TSFC I have come to know many families and not one of our children is on the same medications. A doctor that has experience wading through all of the complexities that come with TS is invaluable.

As well if your son ever needs more intense intervention being seen by the doctor that runs the TS clinic will be of great help. Not only do they have both a daily outpatient and an inpatient program that is run by Dr. Carroll he also has many connections to other community services that others just won't have.

I do look forward to seeing Dr Carroll and I think I will now start making notes about what I want to ask him.
