  • Hitting, punching

    Hi!

Any parents dealing with hitting or punching tics? My 8 year old hits/ punches when excited or socially nervous.

    This is a tricky one!

Have a look at the Anger Section of the Forum for relevant articles posted among the "sticky" posts at the top of the section.

That sounds rough. Does he seem angry when he does it, or is it just a tic, like a head shake is just a tic?

Sometimes my son will have a flash of anger and throw things. Sweep everything off the night stand. That sort of thing.

I have been reading the Leaky Brakes website a lot lately. They have a nice pdf about rage: http://www.cpri.ca/uploads/section00...rakes_rage.pdf

Not sure if I understand what you mean....are you saying your son does not exhibit signs of a rage reaction?

No signs of rage yet. He tends to hit when he is entering a new social situation and is very excited.

              Hi tlpatzer,

              I'm a 38 year old with TS.

That is a common complaint. From my experience of it when there is no anger present it's more like little dominance displays. That relationship between TS and oppositional behaviors is like a little instinctual shove towards those sorts of behaviors. It's normal in kids to try to figure out the social hierarchy, in TS we often have some unique issues in controlling that.

That's a great insight, Flutterguy, thanks.

Any suggestions how a parent can be helpful to the shover and the shovee?

I have sometimes seen other children cringe a bit when they see my kid coming.
