A later news report on deep brain stimulation is CLICK HERE

Dr. Donald Richardson of Tulane University in New Orleans believes his patient was only the fourth person in the world with Tourette Syndrome to receive a deep-brain stimulator. Doctors in Cleveland treated the first patient in the United States.

The device is FDA-approved. Dr.Richardson said private insurance companies in the U.S. should cover the cost of the stimulator. There was no mention in the above linked report on the cost of the procedure

Here is a report on the case of Peter Jensen who had the procedure performed in Cleveland.

His return home is delayed due to brief reactive psychosis.

Brief reactive psychosis is the psychiatric term for psychosis that is triggered by extreme stress, said Chauncey Adams, clinical director of Dixie Regional Medical Center's Behavioral Medicine Unit. He said it is not unusual for people who've had surgery and are subjected to medications to awaken and become temporarily psychotic.

Default Does Deep Brain Stimulation Stop TS Tics?

James Michael Veazey is a young man in Port Arthur, Texas who underwent Deep Brain Stimulation therapy in June 2005

With all the equipment in place, the system was activated July 14 and, according to Veazey, James Michael's tics were reduced by 95 percent.

Unfortunately for James Michael and his family, the surgery is not covered by insurance and the expenses will cost approximately $75,000.
