Thread: So yeah. I think I may have Tourette Syndrome

Default So yeah. I think I may have Tourette Syndrome

I'm not sure, though. I guess I never really thought much about it until now. The other day I read an article in the newspaper about a young boy with Tourette's, and the article listed some of the facts found on this site and gave the URL.

I've had tics for years now, the most disruptive one being an eye twitch, blinking thing. It's like I'll force my eyes shut, it's strange, and sometimes I'll do it for so long and so frequently that my eyes will be sore the next day. It's especially bad when I'm at work. My job's boring and repetitive and my mind wanders easily, which I find makes the tics worse. I've had it for about 6 years and I've had friends and family comment on it. I also had one where I'd clear my throat with my mouth closed which did something to the muscles there so that even simply things like jogging would cause me to gag. That (thankfully) only lasted about 8 or 9 months. Another thing I noticed recently (well I didn't notice, a friend pointed it out to me) is that I'll sniff, twitch my nose and snort, often together. I'm not sure how long this has been going on since I never really noticed it until it was pointed out to me. I'm not sure when it started, but I remember that when I was young, I would make a humming noise in the back of my throat. I remember getting in trouble from my teachers and my mother and being told to stop, and I remember being so frustrated because I couldn't.

The thing about the article that really got me thinking were some of the associated behaviors and the sensory issues it listed. The little boy in the article wouldn't wear socks because the seems irritated him to the point of frustration. I can sort of relate to that. For a few years now, I haven't been able to sleep in a bed unless the sheets are perfectly straight. If the sheets are wrinkled and I feel it, I can't even tolerate lying in the bed, let alone sleep in it. It's the same reason why I can't wear clothes to bed. I usually end up getting out of bed in the middle of the night to straighten the sheets back out after I wrinkle them by tossing and turning. I just thought it was me being weird. The article also mentioned anxiety problems (which I have), and ADD (which I most definitely have).

I guess I avoided thinking about it or telling people because I was embarrassed, and the only real 'problems' I had were from strange looks and problems in school. I don't think I would seek treatment if Tourette's is indeed what I have, but I guess I'm at a point in my life (I'm 19 now~) where I want to know what's up with me, and know why I do what I do. I will see a doctor about this, but I'm just looking for opinions from people familiar with such symptoms. Thanks for reading my wall of text. ;)

    hey Snaptastic,

Welcome to the site. I just joined a couple of days ago, and just being able to read other people's stories helped me realize that I'm not "wierd" by doing some of the tics I do.

I don't even know what's wrong with me yet, but it's good that you decided to start figuring things out seeing how you're still young. I'm 29 and I'm finally starting to do something about it.

One thing that's definately different between me and you is that you said that you didn't notice your tics, but instead, people had to point them out to you . I on the other hand notice exactly what I'm doing, and constantly try not doing them .

in any case, there are good people on this site that can hopefully give you good advice.

Good luck, and let us know how things turn out!

    Snaptastic,

    Welcome to the Forum!

Many of us arrived at the suspicion that we had Tourette from having read an article or heard a program that described some of the behaviours of Tourette and we suddenly related to them.

Because there is no blood test or other diagnostic test for Tourette it must be diagnosed by a physician who has clinical experience and a professional interest in Tourette. The diagnosis is made through interview and observation.

No one can diagnose you on this Forum, but we can point you in the right direction.

First tell your family doctor you suspect you have Tourette Syndrome. Don't be surprised if s/he passes it off because many family doctors just don't have suffiient training in recognizing Tourette.

However you need this first step in order to get a referral to a specialist such as a Neurologist or Psychiatrist who understands Tourette.

Be persistent with your GP, and don't back down until you are given a referral.

Next, make some calls to local hospitals. If you live in an area with teaching hospitals, call the departments of Neurology and Psychiatry and ask if there is someone on their staff who sees people with Tourette Syndrome.

Do not be intimidated by seeing a Psychiatrist, because it just so happens that many doctors in that specialty have a professional interest in Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette is not a Psychiatric disorder, but rather a Neurological disorder, but the behavioural aspects of Tourette appeal to some physicians in Psychiatry.

If you have difficulty finding a specialist, contact the local support organization for Tourette in your area. They usually know who the physicians who see Tourette are.

In what area are you located?

Thanks for the responses. I know I can't get a diagnosis here... Maybe I was just looking to vent and organize my thoughts before I talked to my mum about it. Or something like that. =P

    I live in South-Central Ontario.

That's what we can help you do! Have a look at this Forum posting

It contains several elements that give an overview and details about what Tourette is.

Using these resources, you can have the information to present your case to your Mom as well as to your doctor.

Your choices for Tourette support Chapters are in Ottawa, Toronto or Hamilton depending on which is closer.

    Check here for details

At what age did you begin noticing some of the behaviours that might be Tourette related?

I live about 10 minutes away from Hamilton, so that's good to know.

Thinking back, the humming thing started when I was 6 or 7, and it lasted until I was at least 10. I'm not sure when it stopped exactly. Other than that, the blinking tic started when I was 13 or 14.

Thank you for the links. I'll check them out now.

    Welcome Snaptastic!

You have made a good first step in obtaining all the information you can. The forum has a great search function where you can find threads relating to specific questions or symptoms you may have.

Steve is right you may have to be persistant as many doctors just don't have the information or they think it must be diagnosed in childhood so they brush off adults who come with symptoms.

Let us know how you make out.

hi, I just read some of your issues, and my son also has problems with clothing. His doctor, Dr. Carrol said that they usually only wear cotton and most kids with tourette's do not like socks. My son also does not wear polyester can not stand it and also clothes are not one piece, like patches were you feel it in the inside. I always thought he was a fussy with his clothes after I found out he has Tourette's it all made sense... He also is fussy about foods he eats if they feel ok very sensory, crowds closed places.
One other thing, he makes the noise sound, it almost soothing to him...I also do not know if he notices it..Well I hope this helps...I know its a long road to find answers , don't give up....

My son has the same issues with clothes. No embroidery or anything that is rough on the inside, and tags drive him nuts. Hanes underwear with the covered waistband and no tag are the best!!!

But socks are the worst - I have the hardest time finding him socks that don't make "bumps" at the edges of the toe seam.
