All proceeds earmarked for Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada

COBOURG -- At an upcoming kids and teens vocal talent show, now marking its fifth year, everyone has a chance to shine no matter what.
Applications are now being accepted for the Legacy Toys and Crafts Vocal Talent Show, the brainchild of store owner Betty Legacy. Ms. Legacy started the annual event as a fundraiser for the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada, to show her eldest granddaughter, Michelle, who has Tourette's, that regardless of what hardships life throws your way, everyone has a highlight, "a special talent," said Ms. Legacy. This year's show is slated for June 23, starting at noon at Cobourg's Victoria Park bandshell. Admission is free and the community is encouraged to grab their lawn chairs and head down to the park for a heart-warming and entertaining afternoon, said Ms. Legacy.

"You would be amazed at the talent young people in Cobourg have to offer," she said. "They get on that stage and sing their hearts out."

The show is open to children and youth, ages four to 18, and the deadline to apply is June 15. Interested singers, accompanied by their parents, are urged to drop into Legacy Toys and Crafts, 9 Elgin St. E., Cobourg to register and pick up a sponsor sheet. A minimum $25 in pledges allows free entry into the contest and last year, 30 singers took part and raised more than $3,000 for the Tourette Syndrome Foundation.

The June 23 show features a silent auction with items donated by area businesses, as well as from her store.

"I've never been told no by any local business I've approached for a silent auction item," she said. "The generosity of this community is amazing." A hand-made quilt has been donated as a raffle item with tickets available for $5 each. Ms. Legacy explained every penny raised through the talent show, silent auction and raffle goes to the foundation.

Every singer will leave the competition with a swag bag and a specially-designed participation certificate, noted the Cobourg toy store owner. The contest is divided into three age groups, with first- and second-place finishes awarded for each. In addition, there is an overall 'Best of Show' award handed out. This singer will receive a trophy plus a one-song recording session, courtesy of Fiddlehead Sound in Warkworth, said Ms. Legacy.

Michelle Legacy, 16, will perform but not compete in the 5th annual talent show fundraiser for the Tourette's Foundation of Canada. Michelle has won the competition a few times. The show is slated for the Victoria Park Bandshell on June 23 at noon.

This is an amazing fund raiser/ talent showcase! We have attended for the past four years. Betty Legacy has been a huge support to us especially when my daughter was first diagnosed.
