The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has announced it will release a consumer guide to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) on April 28, 2015.

According to the APA, Understanding Mental Disorders: Your Guide to the DSM-5 will help patients with mental illness and their families better understand symptoms and course of mental illness and provide guidance about when to seek help and information about available treatments.

"Understanding Mental Disorders is a unique resource that serves as a tool for communication between mental health professionals, patients, and families. It translates information from DSM-5 into simple language that can empower those who need mental health care to understand disorders and seek help. It educates in a way that allows patients to take an active role in their care," APA president-elect Renee Binder, MD, said in a statement.

"For the first time, the language in the DSM-5 used by mental health professionals has been adapted into clear, concise descriptions of disorders for the general public," the APA notes.

In addition to specific symptoms for each disorder, readers will find the following:
    • Risk factors and warning signs
    • Related disorders
    • Ways to cope
    • Tips to promote mental health
    • Personal stories
    • Key points about mental disorders and treatment options
    • A special chapter dedicated to treatment essentials and ways to get help
    • Resources that include a glossary, a list of medications, and support groups

In this archived, downloadable webinar, Dr. Martinez will talk with us about the history of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and will give us an overview of changes in the most recent version, the DSM 5. She will discuss how clinicians use the DSM 5 to determine diagnosis, how diagnoses are used in treatment, as well as some limitations of DSM 5 diagnosis. If you would like to understand how a professional comes up with a diagnosis, how diagnoses are used, and what a diagnosis means, this is a webinar for you.

Dr. Colleen Martinez is a licensed clinical social worker and a registered play therapy supervisor with more than 20 years experience providing clinical services to children and their families. She has worked in hospital, correctional, outpatient mental health, private practice, and school settings, and specializes in play therapy and treating children. In her private practice, she provides supervision and consultation to individuals and agencies, particularly regarding interventions with children. She provides school based play therapy to preschoolers in Irvington, NJ and is also a part time lecturer at Rutgers University in their MSW program.
